Cette manifestation dure en fait depuis samedi dernier et a drainé quelques 100 000 personnes d’après les médias US. Un sacré exploit au pays de l’oncle Sam où, je ne le répéterai jamais assez, la manifestation dans la rue ne fait pas partie de l’arsenal habituel du citoyen lambda. La confiance dans le processus démocratique passe largement en premier par ici.
La guerre en Irak est encore un sujet très sensible politiquement puisque les leaders du parti démocrate, l’opposition quoi, n’ont pas souhaité s’associer au mouvement. De l’autre côté du spectre politique, Bill O’Reilly en a des poussées d’urticaire. Il a fait de cette maman américaine pacifiste, une de ses cibles préférées. Il faut ainsi le voir perdre totalement son sang-froid, quand Phil Donahue lui demande si lui-même a un de ses propres enfants à la guerre. Lui, Bill, l’égérie faite homme du patriotisme sauce conservatrice :

Et dans la foulée, se faire aussi remettre en place par le général Wesley Clark, pourtant consultant militaire attitré de Fox News (O’Reilly reprochant au général d’être allé discuter avec Cindy Sheehan, ce à quoi le général lui répond que c’est naturel car elle a fait le plus grand des sacrifices pour son pays : elle a perdu son enfant) :

Pour de l’info terrain, les journalistes de Libé étaient sur place à Washington samedi. Ils nous parlent des manifestants et surtout de la contre-manifestation “pour” la guerre :

Ne pas rater aussi la jolie jeune fille, avec son aimable pancarte envers la France.
Le grand débat sur la blogosphère US tient en la vraie dimension de cette manifestation. Les blogueurs des deux bords se battent sur le nombre réel de manifestants. Nos si sympathiques amis de LGF (Little Green Football) poursuivant leur entreprise de désinformation caractérisée et de démolition de la liberté d’expression (si t’es pas pour la guerre, juste ferme-là) en insinuant que le rassemblement de samedi a fait un véritable flop, photo à l’appui :

En France ces manifs ont fait flop.
Les EU ont un passé glorieux dans ce domaine années 60+70, et elles ont contribué à faire cesser la (sale) guerre au Vietnam.

Arrêter la personne qui est devenue l’icône du mouvement contre la guerre est plutôt mal joué de la part des autorités. Cela ne fera qu’accroître son capital sympathie.
En ce qui concerne la controverse à propos du nombre réel de participants à la manifestation, il ne fait pas de doute que les photos sont des éléments de propagande utilisés par les conservateurs de tous bords, LGF entre autre, pour minimiser la réelle prise de conscience et de position de certains américains vis à vis de cette foutue guerre !

NoComment, Cindy Sheehan is not using her sons death as a way to spur an anti-war movement. Her son was used by this government to fight in an illegal war, a war based on lies. Please don’t give me that crap that Democrats in Congress voted for this war.They voted to give Bush the right to go to war if it was absolutely necessary, not on trumped up charges of WMD. Bush is caught in his lies and there were more than 100,000 people in Washington, not to mention other states that are calling Bush on his lies. Too bad you guys couldn’t get even a few hundred out to back Bush. People are finally seeing what a waste this war is. And by the way, No Comment, when are you going to enlist?

Indirectement ce que je viens de voir se soir sur France 2, dans Mots croisés (et que les expat’s verront peut-être sur TV 5) me fait peur … mais me permet de ne pas m’étonner quand je vois Cindy Sheehan traîné dans la bout l’administration Bush.
En effet dans le reportage dans Mots croisés qui est un émission d’investigation tout a fais sérieuse nous explique témoin a l’appuis que la CIA et le gouvernement américain orchestré des enlèvements dans n’importe quels pays et envoyé la personne dans des pays en marges de la légalité pour les droits de l’homme pour pouvoir réaliser des interrogatoires musclé, tous ça pour dire que Cindy Sheehan menottée devant la maison blanche, ça ne m’étonne pas sous un administration républicaine, qui plus est sous un administration présidé par Bush :-/ .

Une petite erreur :
L’émission où on a parlé de la CIA était Pièces à Conviction sur France 3, Mots Croisés a suivi ensuite sur France 2 sur deux sujets franco-français (le logement social, puis le “combat” Sarko-Villepin). Comme ça, si c’est diffusé sur TV5 vous ne serez pas déçus !!!!
En tout cas, je constate que l’on a eu la même soirée TV, Joey et moi. ;) lol

Ils l’ont arrêtée pour quoi? Parce qu’elle manifestait? ou parce qu’elle était trop près de la Maison Blanche? Est-ce que les manifestants “pour la guerre” ont été arrêtés eux aussi?

Parce que justement, les manifestants ont arrêté de marcher pour faire un sitting. Ce qui est… interdit. La police les a prévenu 3 fois avant de procéder aux arrestations en commençant par Cindy Sheehan.

It is just plain forbidden to stand still for hours or to sit in as a protest around the white house.
Would I go and wave a “Bush, way to go!” sign (which I would not do) I would get arrested too.
Just a year ago I was asked to move after barely 5 minutes of taking pictures and trying to see something through the white house windows from 200 yards.
Y’all need to stop these epidermic reactions any time you see the word Bush in a paper, it’s getting ridiculous and doesn’t help taking arguments seriously.

Mathieu, I understand why Cindy was arrested. I also know that sitting down was a planned ploy to be arrested for a photo op. The police were doing their duty to arrest her and she achieved what she was looking for. However, if the main stream media would honestly report what was happening on the ground such ploys would not be necessary. The reported numbers varied depending on how right-wing the media outlet was. This was a huge demonstration whose point it was to get across to the president how many people are against this war. The so-called “freedom walk” put on by this administration just recently was a total flop and this should prove how angry the American public is. The main stream media hardly reported that demonstration and would not show any arial photos that would have been an embarrassment to this administration.These demonstrations are important and need to be covered, it was demonstrations such as these that finally ended the Viet Nam war. Can you imagine how many more of these would be going on if there was a draft? Colleges everywhere would be involved! What I also found to be interesting was the varied ages and incomes of the people protesting. It shows the wide range of types of people who are angry. It is not just young people who do not want to be drafted, but millions of people who just see this war for what it is, a huge mistake by an imcompetent president. The reason there are “epidemic reactions” to anything Bush does or says is because he has not been honest with the American people and they finally see him for who he is. It’s not just a matter of bashing Bush, it is the frustration that everytime he opens his mouth it is a lie or a cover-up. I would rather see blogs like these that are able to allow the average person voice their opinion (even if you don’t agree with that person) than not to be able to have this freedom of speech. If the media won’t do it, what other choice do we have? I may not always be articulate in what I have to say, but it does not change how strongly I feel that it needs to be said. Yes, I make many mistakes, but this is one of the few blogs that I have found that the bloggers are so kind and generous and willing to correct me if I am mistaken. I only wish there were more blogs like this in the USA.

I’m glad to read your comment in that it shows that you have solid and serious arguments.
I do agree with you that the importance of these protests should not be underestimated but my point was to temper the Bush Bashing resulting from this post beacuse in its very essence the arrest of Ms Sheehan has nothing to do with who’s running the white house, it’s just the law.
I think a fair post would have stressed the fact that this is definitely a photo op and maybe wouldn’t have led to such irrelevant comments on how bush is stupid, evil, incomptent, the devil (and all the usual adjectives and name calling)
I am also sad to see that while some bush opponents have some good points, they are lost in the middle of 7th grader’s insults and assertions (Once again “bush is evil”, “bush is a liar”, “bush is an idiot”, etc.), which in my opinion, even if they often have serious ground to support them, do not help at all to show an educated face of the opposition.

Mathieu, Bush bashing is just as strong with this presidencey as Clinton bashing was, and still is with the republicans. That is not to say that it is good, it is just human nature. I agree, insults get you nowhere, but it is frustration that brings on that behavior. I find it amusing that the republicans who are screaming the loudest about the treatment that Bush is receiving in the blogs, a few newsrooms, and newspaper editorials are the same ones who sat silently and smiled when the main stream media would spend hours talking about Monica Lewinski. I would not go as far to say that Bush is evil, however I do believe he is a liar. I don’t know what is in his soul, but I do know what comes out of his mouth. When president Clinton said he did not have sex with that woman, he was lying. When Bush claims that he is not going to invade Iraq unless it is a last resort was an outright lie. He must be held accountable for these lies. Please don’t be so hard on those of us who resort to 7th grade insults, it is frustration and shear anger that feeds this behavior. I do have to wonder, though, what would the police have done if all 100,000 protestors sat down at the same time? Would the police only have arrested Cindy? Just a thought.

I agree with you on the fact that Clinton bashing was no less ridiculous despite the fact that in both cases (Bush and Clinton) there were (are) some relevant griefs amidst the complaints (they both lied for example, even though the monicagate didn’t claim as many lives ans billions of dollars).
I am wondering too what would have happened if every protestors had sat.

Un lycéen camerounais de 18 ans sans papier redoublait sa terminale à Paris (il avait été repéré mais on lui avait permis de passer son bac gràce aux pressions de ses professeurs et de ses camarades de classe.) Il a été emmené à la rentrée. Professeurs et élèves ont fait un scandale dans l’aéroport. Conclusion: les passagers se sont tous levés et ont refusé de partir (le personnel de bord a aussi refusé de faire décoller l’avion.)
La police a renoncé à expulser le lycéen et Sarkozy a même accepté de lui donner un visa d’étudiant.
Donc, si tout le monde s’était assis….
Bon, on n’est pas en France. :-)
(I don’t know what would have happened if everyone had sat down at the same time, but here’s a recent story from France where people stand up at the same time. There was a Camerounian student who was studying for his bac in Paris (without proper papers or visa). When he turned 18, the police came to take him. His professors and classmates all protested so that he could take his final exam and receive his degree. Alas, he failed. When he came back to school the police came back and deported him. Professors and students followed and made a ruckus in the airport. Consequently, all passengers on the flight stood up and refused for the plane to take off. The pilot and flight staff concurred. The police renounced deporting the boy and the professors managed to secure him a student visa. That was a week or two ago, in Paris.)

Mme Sheehan a eu mieux pour faire attention. L’opinion publique peut s’allumer son très rapidement. Une mère greieving de sourire ne regarde pas très bonne.
