Hilarant.

“In the world of soccer, how important is the World Cup ?
- It’s the biggest sporting and cultural event on the world stage. In 2002, the World Cup final was watched by some 85 trillions people.”

“To americanize, John, the way soccer is followed overseas…The passion it inspires… It seems almost out of control. Why ?
-Well, there are two reasons for this. First, there’re foreigners. And second, it’s nations going against nations, revisiting ancient rivalries. In a way, it’s a metaphor for global conflict.

(…)

But americans are… We’re a passionate people… We are a nationalistic people… We can get into those kind of rivalries as well.
- Yeah, but americans don’t need a metaphor for war, we have war. If anything we use war, is a metaphor for sports. Take today for example, I have a transcript here of the pilot’s response after he droped the bomb on Zarkaoui, and I quote : goooaaaaaaal. Roger. End quote.”

Steven Colbert.

“They’re trying to recruit us.
All of which brings me tonight’s word : Goooaaaaaaaaaaal.
As in, it should be our goal to completely ignore the world cup.”

“Now, on paper, the World Cup sounds great.
I mean I love the World Series, and the NBA World Championship. And, of course, Disney World.
But, for some reason, in other countries, the definition of world includes others countries.
In fact, soccer is apparently the one thing the rest of the world agrees on. Which, I think, is why we should reject it. It is the metric system of sports ! We don’t need it. We don’t want it.”

“They are plenty of reasons to hate the World Cup.
I don’t trust a sport where the US women’s team is better than the US men’s team.”

“But, Steven, soccer’s popularity has been sterabily growing in the US.
Well, yes, it has. It has been growing… illegally ! The biggest soccer fans in the US are immigrants, who are also the biggest treat to America.”

“Here is a little tip to the INS, just stick out the giant TVs at Best Buy during the first round match between Mexico and Angola, and deport anyone you catch watching it !”

“For the rest of us… You might as well root for the US… Think about how great it will be, if we kick the world’s ass at a sport we don’t even care about ! Then, we can spend the next 4 years rubbing it in their face ! And that’s a worthy goal.”

    GO ‘CANES!!!!
