No E-Mail Fridays

La dernière mode dans les entreprises US : “pas d’emails le vendredi”.

Exemple de US Cellular à Chicago, le vice-président exécutif ayant lancé le mot d’ordre à ses 5500 subordonnés, il y a deux ans et demi :

Two and a half years ago, Ellison was receiving an average of 200 e-mails a day, many of which went unopened. After getting cyber-indigestion, he sent out a memo to his 5,500 subordinates.

“I’m announcing a ban on e-mail every Friday,” Ellison’s memo read. “Get out to meet your teams face-to-face. Pick up the phone and give someone a call. … I look forward to not hearing from any of you, but stop by as often as you like.”

Une révolution “contre la culture de la communication impersonnelle”, forçant les employés à se parler au téléphone et à se rencontrer en chair et en os :

Eventually, the policy won over staff members. Forced to use the phone, employee John Coyle learned that a co-worker who he thought was across the country was, in fact, across the hall.

“I asked him where he was and he said I’m on the fourth floor, and I said, ‘Well so am I,’” said Coyle. “We now have a working relationship that is deeper than he’s the guy that provides reports.”

Public affairs manager Tyler Caroll, because of her gender-neutral name, used to get e-mails addressing her as a “he” or “Mr.” Phone calls on a no-e-mail-Friday changed all that.

I don’t have a lot of trouble with spam anymore, my spam catcher gets about 90% of it. I don’t miss the e-mails for Viagra I used to get or the products for “male balding”…geez. How do these people get your e-mail addresses anyway?

I do like the idea of cutting back on the e-mails for business, though. I’m afraid we are producing a whole generation of people who will lack the social skills needed to be successful. It would be sad to see the personal touch taken out of the business world.

I’ve found that my daughters e-mail me more than they call on the phone because of their convenience, they are all so busy. But I’d much rather talk to them on the phone and at least have the opportunity to hear their voice. I think I’ll tell them that for now on, I’ll only read my e-mails once a week and the rest of the week they have to call. I’ll tell them to blame Mr. Ellison.

Regarding the casual Fridays…my husband’s office had the good fortune to have half day Fridays from the end of May until the end of August. It was great because he could take every Friday off at that time and only use up half of his allotted vacation time. Now a new company took over and they are talking about canceling that perk. Oh well…. it was good while it lasted.
