I’m an American guy living in France, and I can see both sides. For example, in the recent French election I was amazed that I didn’t see one TV ad, one print ad, one radio ad for any of the candidates. In the US, 30-second TV ads are practically the ONLY way to communicate to the electorate.

But I’m likewise amazed that a nation of highly-educated, socially aware French individuals can’t understand the simple concept of customer service. Perhaps with Sarkozy’s forthcoming changes to labor rules, folks will realize it’s in their best interest to make the effort to satisfy the people who pay their salaries. Hopefully, my compatriots will also realize in 2008 that it’s in America’s self-interest to learn about, and collaborate more with the rest of the world, starting with our historical allies :-)
